Strategic Life Planning is about creating a plan for your life that describes where you want to be at some date in the future and how you plan to get there.
It is not a financial plan, although it may encompass that. It's not an estate plan, although that may also be one of the strategies you need to put in place to fully implement your strategic life plan.
No, a Strategic Life Plan describes how you want to live your life today, and the ultimate dream you have for yourself at some point in the future.
When we work with clients to develop and implement a strategic life plan, we start with the dream they want to create. It doesn't matter what it is or how big of a stretch goal it might be.
The important component is to articulate that dream and put it down on paper. Once that's done, we can begin the process of identifying the success measures that will determine when and if you are close to achieving your dream.
From there we work backwards to list where you are today in all aspects of your life - financial, career accomplishments, family, work-life balance, etc. - to identify the areas that need attention and adjustment.
Then we put some strategies and actions in place that if followed, will ensure you have the opportunity to achieve your dream.
We say opportunity, because things change. The world around us is constantly changing, and what we imagine today may be completely different five or more years in the future.
Consequently, a Strategic Life Plan is an ever evolving, fluid document. As you would do in business, you should review and update your life plan on an annual basis, tacking on one more year in the future so it's always current. |
